Nitrous Oxide
One of the sedation options our pediatric dentists may recommend for your child is nitrous oxide. This mild form of sedation is a great option for helping children feel calmer and more relaxed so they can receive care in comfort and completely without stress.
What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is a mild sedative medication. It comes in the form of a colorless gas with a slightly sweet odor and is provided via inhalation. Our pediatric dentists and team will fit a small nose mask over your child’s face, and as they inhale your child will begin to feel more comfortable and relaxed. They may tell you that they feel like they are “floating” while under the effects of nitrous oxide. We will monitor your child closely throughout their appointment to ensure their safety and comfort.
After your child’s treatment is complete, we will gradually decrease the flow of gas until your child has completely recovered. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, and your child should recover and return to regular activities shortly after leaving our office.
